[Songdo Elementary School Embracing the Sloping Village]

Songdo Elementary School is reborn as a learning space that breathes in harmony with the surrounding sloping village. Incorporating the village’s alleys and terraced terrain, it allows children to naturally experience the local landscape in their daily lives. Classrooms, hallways, terraces, and courtyards connect with the open slopes, creating a space where the everyday life of the village and the time of learning overlap. The school embraces the village, and the village envelops the school, forming a communal environment where both grow together.

[송도의 경사지 마을을 품은 학교]

송도초는 주변의 경사지 마을과 함께 호흡하는 배움터로 새롭게 태어난다. 마을의 골목과 계단식 지형을 담아내어, 아이들이 일상 속에서 자연스럽게 지역의 풍경을경험하도록 한다. 교실과 복도, 테라스, 사잇마당은 열린 경사면과 이어지며, 마을의 일상적 삶과 배움의 시간이 겹쳐지는 장소가 된다. 학교는 마을을 품고, 마을은 학교를 감싸며, 함께 성장하는 공동체적 환경을 형성한다.

[An Ecological School Connecting Sea, Mountain, and Park]

Leveraging its unique location where sea and mountain meet, the school creates an open park where ecological experiences and learning occur both inside and outside the building. The campus extends beyond a space for students, designed as a shared place where both students and residents can experience and linger in nature. The park-like school, blending natural lines, patterns, and tactile elements with diverse natural materials, becomes an ecological classroom where learning and play coexist for children, and an open village park for residents to stroll and relax in daily life.

[바다-산-공원을 잇는 생태 학교]

바다와 산이 맞닿은 입지의 특성을 살려, 학교 건물 안팎으로 생태를 체험하고 학습할 수 있는 열린 공원을 조성한다. 교정은 학생만을 위한공간을 넘어 학생과 주민 모두가 자연을 체험하며 머무를 수 있는 공유의 장으로 계획된다. 자연을 닮은 선과 패턴, 촉감을 가진 다양한 자연재료로 혼합된 공원형 학교는 아이들에게는 배움과놀이가 공존하는 생태교실이 되고, 주민들에게는 일상의 산책과 휴식이 가능한 열린 마을 공원이 된다.

[Songdo Elementary’s Symbolic Hub: The Library]

The library serves as the heart of the new Songdo Elementary, connecting adjacent existing facilities (cafeteria, auditorium), the reading courtyard (central garden), the upper outdoor performance space, and general classrooms. More than a book-centered space, it acts as an open platform where different functions and activities intersect, fostering learning and interaction. Within the three-dimensional flow of movement, students freely engage in learning, rest, and communication, making the library a symbolic hub that connects the entire school.

[송도초의 상징적 허브, 도서실]

도서실은 인접한 기존 시설(식당, 강당), 독서마당(중정), 상부 옥외 공연장과 일반 교실들을 매개하며 새 송도초의 심장 역할을 한다. 책 중심이 아닌, 서로 다른 기능과 활동이 만나는 교차점으로서 배움과 교류가 겹쳐지는 열린 플랫폼이 된다. 입체적으로 이어지는 동선 속에서 학생들은 학습, 휴식, 소통을 자유롭게 경험하며, 도서관은 학교 전체를 연결하는 상징적 허브가 된다.

[Knowledge Plaza: An Open Learning Space for Lingering and Ascending]

The Knowledge Plaza is an open learning square extending from the library, organically connecting books, the garden (marine ecological park), and classrooms. Here, children sit, walk, and linger, naturally engaging in reading, discussion, play, and communication. In a space with open vertical and horizontal views where learning and rest intertwine, the Knowledge Plaza, alongside the library, becomes another central hub of the school, uniting all grades in a shared space for growth.

[지식 마루: 머무르고 오르는 열린 배움터]

지식 마루는 도서관에서 확장된 열린 배움의 광장으로, 책과 정원(해양생태공원), 교실을 유기적으로 연결한다. 아이들은 이곳에서 앉고 걷고 머무르며 자연스럽게 독서와 토론, 놀이와 소통을 이어간다. 수직과 수평으로 열린 시선 속에서 학습과 휴식이 겹쳐지는 지식마루는 도서관과 함께 학교의 또 다른 중심이자 전 학년을 아우르는, 모두가 함께 성장하는 장소가 된다.

[Marine Ecological Park: The Curves of Nature and the Lines of Architecture]

The natural curves of land and sea meet the refined straight lines added by the new Songdo Elementary, creating a harmonious landscape. The school’s outdoor spaces are integrated into a single marine ecological park, connected by walkways, serving as an open space for natural learning for both students and local residents. Upon entering the main gate, the three-dimensional landscape of the Knowledge Plaza and central garden creates a vibrant atmosphere, guiding eyes and steps toward the main entrance. The narrative of the marine ecological park, beginning at the main gate, continues through exhibitions and rest areas, encircling the playground and leading to the back gate, forming a new path in the community. This path naturally connects with the alleyways of the northern sloping village, linking the school and village into a continuous landscape.

[해양생태공원: 자연의 곡선과 건축의 직선]

자연이 빚어낸 땅과 바다의 곡선은 새 송도초가 더하는 정갈한 직선과 만나 조화로운 풍경을 이룬다. 학교 곳곳의 외부 공간들은 하나의 해양생태공원으로 통합되어 산책로로 이어지며, 학생 뿐만 아니라 지역 주민에게도 열린 자연학습의 장이 된다. 정문에 들어서면 지식마루와 중정(정원)의 입체적 풍경이 생동감을 만들고 주출입구로 시선과 몸을 이끈다. 정문에서 시작된 해양생태공원의 이야기는 전시와 쉼터를 따라 운동장 둘레로 후문으로 이어져 지역의 새로운 길을 형성한다. 이 길은 북측 경사지 마을의 골목길과 자연스럽게 맞닿아 학교와 마을을 하나의 연속된 풍경으로 연결한다.
