The proposed new memorial for the site is envisioned to evolve over time, reflecting the growth of our understanding and hopes, and is supported by an interactive system of distributed components. It seeks to honor the varied experiences of visitors to the cemetery with installations that captivate and offer nuanced reflections on complex emotions.

Throughout the site, strands of stainless steel leaves are thoughtfully arranged. This ethereal addition complements the natural and tranquil environment, providing a continuous space for healing, hope, and reflection. Each cluster of leaves is fashioned from brushed stainless steel, a material selected for its suitability in augmenting this moving tribute. The stainless steel not only captures the changing light of day but also responds to variations in temperature, giving it a dynamic and lifelike presence. The surface is smooth and yields a gentle softness upon touch.

The strength and adaptability of stainless steel serve as metaphors, honoring those who have resisted, survived, and endured the horrors of slavery. The material’s resilience allows the leaves to sway softly in the wind. Visitors are encouraged to interact with the memorial by using the leaves as seating or by adjusting their angles, actively participating in the reshaping of the landscape to reflect their personal intentions.

Within the cemetery, an innovative material known as ‘Photo Glass’ is employed for both educational and security purposes. This glass, infused with various pictures and writings, is positioned around the cemetery, enhancing the site’s informational and commemorative functions.
