Design Description

Drawing inspiration from the robust character of Iceland’s majestic landscapes, which feature stunning volcanoes, this design proposes a series of connections with the site that are visual, physical, emotional, and epic. To fulfill this design concept, cone-shaped geometries are generated on the site, with the main axis oriented towards the Hverfjall volcano, marking it as the ultimate point of focus.

The building’s surface is primarily clad in dark grey stone, chosen to harmonize with the surrounding nature and volcanic vistas. This material choice is pivotal, not only for aesthetic reasons but also for its cultural resonance with the Icelandic landscapes.

Central to the design is the consideration of the prime views from within the building, particularly the centrally located greenhouse garden. The southern façade is envisioned as a transparent glass expanse, inviting deep daylight penetration and framing expansive views of the natural scenery from the dining area.

Sustainability is a key driver of this project. A geothermal energy system is planned for heating, and abundant spa waters are to be filtered and repurposed for irrigation. This sustainable ethos is further manifested in the use of natural light, which floods the interior through the south-facing glass façade and skylights.

Crowning the building is an observatory, a space where visitors can immerse themselves in the epic vistas, melding their emotions with the ever-changing grandeur of nature. Every moment is an opportunity to witness the landscape in new and profound ways.
